Illustrated talk, with Dr Finlay Macleod, on the making of the book Ronan agus Brianult. The occasion is the 40th anniversary of the launch of Acair Ltd (Gaelic publishers) and takes place at An Lanntair Arts Centre, Stornaway on 24th May 2017.

Andrew and his twin brother Alasdair born 1948, grew up in Galloway in a wild and beautiful region of South West Scotland, a land of hills, rivers and woods, full of history and farmlands and distinctive towns. Another formative influence was to be found in the islands of Colonsay and Oransay where family lived and farmed in the setting of a  most beautiful Hebridean island, richly endowed with sea and shore and ruined priory, site of a medieval carving school and housing a collection of Celtic Romanesque stones. A place much visited by artists,  designers, archaeologists and historical researchers.

Schooling in Glasgow was enhanced by a very strong Art Department at Bellahouston Academy and by studying and graduating from Glasgow School of Art. Thereafter teaching art in Glasgow, The Western Isles and the Isle of Skye. Andrew works from his studio painting, printmaking and carving. The landscape, folklore and wildlife are a constant source of inspiration combined with a love of technique and craftsmanship.

Andrew makes study trips abroad which result in themes and subjects which he then develops. Exploring Northern Europe and around the Mediterranean has been a lifelong addiction, often accompanying such with family and friends.

He exhibits both locally and nationally and has work in various private and public collections as well as carrying out commissions. He is an Associate of The Society of Graphic Fine Art and a member of Highland Print Studio. Andrew enjoys researching and undertaking solo and joint exhibitions with various colleagues and friends. He also contributes to the Isle of Colonsay’s Spring and October Festivals and enjoys the company of fellow visitors, islanders and old friends; all basking together in the warmth of the reel.
