Lament for the Children
This carving grew out of two separate events; an exhibition of artworks based upon pipe tunes and a very tragic loss in a flood and storm of three generations of an island family from the Uists.
The tune is a beautifully emotional and structured lament, allegedly composed upon the deaths of Macrimmon young children. Both the sycamore wood and the tune is from Dunvegan, Isle of Skye, the former being two hundred years old and the latter, four hundred.
The grain of the wood itself is like the musical ground of the pibroch; it flows, reforms, doubles and repeats through out the whole composition. I did not work from preliminary drawings but allowed the form and nature of the wood to guide me.
